Four Bears is a totally welded metal sculpture, the face is entirely welded and carved with air grinders.  I start with a basic plate in the form of the face and add chunks of steel to build out the nose, mouth, eyes, etc. Then I weld over those chunks with a mig welder to sculpt the features roughly.  I then take air grinding tools to carve and refine the face, right down to the wrinkles in his face.  I rusted the outer surface for color and texture. The buffalo cape was made by adding thousands of pieces of welding wire to create the fur.  The horns were made of sheet metal.   the buckskin coat was made also of sheet metal and covered with a thin layer of aluminum bronze flame spray.  I used Steel, stainless steel, aluminum bronze, copper, and brass to create this all with natural metal colors.
Fours Bears was actually a Mandan Indian, medicine man and chief during the 1800's.  His image was captured in a painting by George Catlin.  I tried to capture his image and stature in this sculpture.  He was a peacemaker, and I admired that about him.
This piece is one of a kind.
Four Bears - Indian bust sculpture

Let Freedom Soar

  1. The Eagle is probably my most favorite subject.  They portray Freedom, Individualism, and also represent our country in a majestic and noble way.  I created this sculpture totally out of steel, but the beak and talons are over layed with 12 kt. gold. Thousands of feathers are individually handcrafted, cut, ground and heat colored.  I left the tail and head feathers silver to represent the Bald Eagle.  The main mandrel is created out of steel rod and then the head is weld sculpted to give accurate detail.  The talons are formed by blacksmith forming  the shape and carving them into the proper form.
